Premium Character Commission
Premium Character Commission
A custom Premium-style Character Commission features:
A detail-heavy, more realistic style
The line art is generally cleaner and softer (unless you request a harder/scratchier ink style), with varied line-weight that evokes some shading
Coloring and shading is clean and relatively detailed
You can check the progress of ongoing commissions on my Trello board: https://trello.com/b/ceDq1dvc

Explanation of Options:
Portrait/Bust: Cropped at the shoulders or base of the neck, the emphasis is on the character’s face and expression.
Medium: More importance placed on the character’s whole pose, though some parts of the body may be cropped out of frame. Good for showing character acting and expression.
Full Body: The character’s entire figure is visible. Best option for showing the character in an environment, or for showing a whole character design/outfit, or for dramatic acting and action.
Background - None: No surrounding environment included. Props connected to the character, or simple floating shapes/leaves/dust/ephemera are ok. (This is the only option available for portraits.)
Background - Scenic: The character is drawn in perspective, clearly grounded in a physical setting, with simple environmental details like foliage or furniture. In a Medium composition, the background may be largely obscured by the characters. Additional characters, if they’re far enough in the background to be largely simplified, can count as “background” here instead of requiring an “additional character” fee.
Background - Environment Heavy: (Only available for Full Body compositions.) The character’s full body is visible, and set in a fully detailed environment. The character’s expression may be secondary here. Additional characters, if they’re far enough in the background to be largely simplified, can count as “background” here instead of requiring an “additional character” fee.

Process:
Choose the options you’d like from the preceding drop-down menus and complete your purchase.
I’ll send you a confirmation email with a form to request the details of what you’d like. Please fill out your answers and attach any available reference images to your reply.
* Note that this listing is for an illustration commission, not design-work, so please provide clear visual reference images. If you don’t have any for the character, you can supply pictures of other people you’d like me to base their appearance off of, but the amount of back-and-forth design iteration I can do here is limited. If the commission is for a portrait of a real life pet, videos are also very helpful!I’ll respond to clarify any final questions, and then begin on the composition. I’ll send you a rough version of the composition to get your feedback before proceeding to the rough-pencil stage. If it’s a simple portrait, these stages may be combined. Please review the composition carefully and make your requests for major changes here, as revisions become increasingly difficult later on.
Once you’ve approved the composition, I’ll move on to the rough pencil pass. This is where I focus on proportions, expression, and other details to make the character look accurate and “on model”. I’ll send this rough pencil pass as another update for your approval.
Once the rough pencil stage is approved, I’ll begin the final line art phase. The image shouldn’t actually change much at this stage, as any major revisions were made in the previous steps. The focus here is to draw clean lines, add a little shading if needed, and refine any small details. I try to keep as much of the gesture, flow, and energy of the original sketches as possible. We can make some small tweaks here if needed, but larger changes at this stage will cost extra depending on the complexity and time it takes to make them (roughly $35/hour).
If you’ve requested color, I’ll move onto the flat colors, shading, and final rendering stages.
Once you’ve approved the final artwork, the commission is complete and I’ll send you the high-resolution version of the file.
Time Frame:
This depends on the complexity of the commission and how much back-and-forth is required to make revisions, but you can generally expect the whole process to take 1-4 weeks. Let me know up-front if you have a tighter deadline and I’ll check if I can accommodate it.
What I Won’t Draw:
Anything hateful or abusive, Explicit NSFW*, heavy gore
*Since this is a matter of personal taste, I’m being intentionally vague. I can draw artistic nudity and more sensual/implied erotica. (Think HBO/Game of Thrones as a general ballpark.) If we can’t come to an agreement on subject or portrayal, I’ll promptly cancel and refund your purchase. If you’re wondering about a subject, feel free to ask ahead of time!
What about prints?
Let me know if you’re interested. I am currently unable to make and package my own prints, but I have partner shops in the U.S. and here in Greece. I can sign prints that are produced in Greece, but not the ones made in the States. The cost will depend on the size of the print and your zip code.

Otherwise, credit me in text somewhere near the image (e.g. “Header artwork by Nori Retherford”), preferably with a link to any of my social media or website.
I might share the artwork on my social media or as part of my portfolio for self-promotion. I also reserve the right to sell prints or merchandise using the entire image or aspects of it, or to alter the image to make it more generic for such usage. I won’t claim ownership of the character or design. Please let me know if this is an issue. We can negotiate image rights for an additional fee.
You retain ownership of your respective character(s). This does not include image rights to the commissioned artwork as described in the previous clause.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellation requests must be made in writing via email (or whatever preferred communication we’ve been using). If you wish to cancel the commission before work starts on it, I will refund the commission in full. If a cancellation request is made after the thumbnail composition or rough sketch is provided, I will refund 50% of the original payment. No refunds can be issued once the rough sketch is approved and work on the final line art has begun.
